Stability of anisotropic magnetorheological elastomers in finite deformations: A micromechanical approach

چکیده
We study the stability of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) undergoing finite deformations in the presence of a magnetic field and derive a general condition for the onset of macroscopic instabilities. In particular, we focus on anisotropic MREs with magnetoactive particles that are aligned along a particular direction, forming chain-like structures. We idealize the microstructure of such anisotropic magnetosensitive elastomers as a multilayered structure and derive an analytical model for the behavior of these materials. The analytical model, together with the derived condition for the onset of instabilities, is used to investigate the influence of magnetomechanical finite deformations on the stability of the anisotropic MREs. While the formulation is developed for generic hyperelastic magnetosensitive elastomers, the results are presented for a special class of soft materials incorporating a neo-Hookean hyperelastic response. The influence of material properties and loading conditions is investigated, providing a detailed picture of the possible failure modes. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An Optimum Specimen Geometry for Equibiaxial Experimental Tests of Reinforced Magnetorheological Elastomers with Iron Micro- and Nanoparticles
The aim of this paper focused on obtaining the optimum cruciform geometry of reinforced magnetorheological elastomers (MRE) to perform homogeneous equibiaxial deformation tests, by using optimization algorithms and Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. To validate the proposed specimen geometry, a digital image correlation (DIC) system was used to compare experimental result measurements wit...
متن کاملA general result for the magnetoelastic response of isotropic suspensions of iron and ferrofluid particles in rubber, with applications to spherical and cylindrical specimens
This paper puts forth an approximate solution for the effective free-energy function describing the homogenized (or macroscopic) magnetoelastic response of magnetorheological elastomers comprised of non-Gaussian rubbers filled with isotropic suspensions of either iron or ferrofluid particles. The solution is general in that it applies to N = 2 and 3 space dimensions and any arbitrary (non-perco...
متن کاملPrediction of Instability in Planar Anisotropic Sheet Metal Forming Processes
In this paper instability of planar anisotropic sheet metal during a few forming processes is investigated for the first time. For this reason components of the constitutive tangent tensor for planar anisotropic sheets are developed. By using the above tensor location of necking is predicted. Direction of the shear band is also predicted using the acoustic tensor. A finite element program is pr...
متن کاملInfluence of Polyurethane Properties on Mechanical Performances of Magnetorheological Elastomers
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are mainly composed of magnetizable particles and elastic polymer. The polymer matrix plays an important role in mechanical performances of MREs. In this study, the polyurethane (PU), which is synthesized by using toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and poly (propylene glycol) (PPG-220), is selected as a matrix because it has better degradation stability than natural...
متن کاملA network description of the non-Gaussian stress-optic and Raman scattering responses of elastomer networks
The ability to measure orientation in dual or multi-phase materials is of current relevance in the study of the constitution and deformation characteristics of the separate phases in many technologically important polymeric systems. Raman spectroscopy is a very useful tool in this regard because separation of the scattered Raman intensities by phase is possible and because it can be used accura...
